Fountain Pens

There is a moment, the first time you write with a good fountain pen, when you understand why people never go back. The ink lays down without pressure. The line has weight and shade a ballpoint can never give. Your hand, used to gripping and pushing, slowly learns to relax. Fountain pens change how writing feels, and for a surprising number of people that change becomes permanent.

This collection is where that begins. We have brought together our full range of fountain pens, from forgiving first pens to flagship pieces, organised by brand, by nib, by filling system, and by who each pen is really for. Whether you are buying your first or your fifteenth, this is the page to navigate the whole field from.

A fountain pen is not a nostalgic object. It is a better tool that happens to be old.

What sits inside our fountain pens collection

Our fountain pens collection spans the entire spectrum of the craft. At the accessible end sit the steel nib daily writers built to get people started and keep them writing for years. In the middle are the metal bodied, gold trimmed pens that suit a professional desk. At the top are the gold nib flagships and limited editions that collectors build their lives around.

You will find every major filling system here. Cartridge pens for convenience, converter pens for flexibility, and piston fillers for the purest fountain pen experience. You will find every nib width, from extra fine to broad and the specialist italics. And you will find the brands that define the category.

The range is deep on purpose. A first pen and a flagship belong in the same place, because most people who buy one eventually want the other.

If you already know which brand or nib you want, the links throughout this page take you straight there. If you are starting from scratch, read on.

Why write with a fountain pen at all

The honest case for a fountain pen has nothing to do with looking sophisticated. It is about the writing. A fountain pen requires no pressure, so your hand tires far less over long sessions, which matters to anyone who fills notebooks, takes longhand notes, or simply writes a lot. The line it produces has character, with subtle variation in width and shade that a ballpoint flattens out entirely.

Then there is the part nobody expects. A fountain pen makes you want to write.

People who switch report writing more, not less, because the act stops being a chore. A journal that sat empty fills up. Letters get written. The pen turns an obligation into something close to a pleasure, and that is the real reason the habit sticks.

There is also permanence. A good fountain pen is bought once and kept for decades, often handed down. It is the opposite of disposable, in an era of disposable everything.

Choosing your first fountain pen

The first fountain pen is the most important one, because a bad first pen puts people off for life and a good one creates a lifelong writer. The rule is simple. Start with a reliable steel nib pen from a trusted maker, in a fine or medium nib, with a converter so you can use bottled ink. Do not start at the top.

A flagship is wasted on a beginner. Learn the habit on something forgiving first.

The pens we recommend most for first timers share three traits. They write straight out of the box, they survive a learning grip, and they cost little enough that you are not afraid to use them daily. Brands like Lamy, Pilot, and Kaweco all make excellent first pens for exactly these reasons.

Our starter fountain pens collection gathers the models we hand to first time buyers most often, chosen because they make the early days easy. Begin there, write daily for two weeks, and the rest of this page will make far more sense afterwards.

Understanding fountain pen nibs

The nib is the pen. Everything else is the handle. Get the nib right and you will love the pen, get it wrong and even an expensive pen will frustrate you, so this is the choice worth understanding before any other.

Nib width is the main decision. An extra fine nib gives a tight, precise line that suits small handwriting and the thinner papers common in Indian notebooks. A fine nib is the everyday sweet spot for most writers, clean and controlled without being scratchy. A medium nib lays down a bolder, wetter line that feels luxurious and shows ink shading well. A broad nib is for signatures, headings, and anyone who wants their writing to carry real presence.

Most people are happiest on a fine. Our hands tend to write small, and our paper rewards a controlled line.

You can filter the whole range by nib. Our fine nib fountain pens, medium nib fountain pens, and broad nib fountain pens pages let you choose the line first and the pen second, which is the right order for anyone who cares about how the pen actually writes.

How fountain pens are filled

Filling systems sound technical but the choice is straightforward, and it shapes your daily experience more than you might expect. There are three to know.

Cartridge pens are the simplest. A sealed cartridge clicks into the pen, lasts for weeks, and is replaced in seconds with no mess. This is the easiest way to live with a fountain pen and the right choice for a busy desk or frequent travel.

Converter pens take the same body and add a refillable converter, which lets you draw ink from any bottle you like. This opens up hundreds of ink colours and works out cheaper over time. Most modern pens accept both a cartridge and a converter, so you are not locked into either.

Piston fillers are the purist's choice. The mechanism is built into the pen and fills directly from the bottle, holding more ink and feeling like the real thing. Demonstrator pens, with their transparent bodies, show the whole mechanism at work.

For bottled ink users, our fountain pen converter page has the converters that unlock the colour range, our piston filler fountain pens page collects the built in fillers, and our demonstrator fountain pens page holds the clear bodied pens that let you watch the ink move.

The brands we carry, and what each is known for

A fountain pen is bought as much for its maker as its specification, because each house has a character built over decades, and knowing those characters makes choosing far easier.

Lamy is the German house that gets people into fountain pens and keeps them there, with the iconic Safari and the flagship 2000. Our Lamy fountain pen range is where most first time buyers and many lifelong writers settle.

Montblanc is the name the world recognises, the maker of the Meisterstück and a byword for the serious writing instrument. Our Montblanc fountain pens collection holds the flagship pieces and the gold nibs that built the legend.

Sheaffer and Cross bring American heritage and the classic office pen, Waterman brings French elegance, and the Japanese houses bring precision nibs revered worldwide. Our Sheaffer fountain pen, Cross fountain pen, and Waterman fountain pen pages cover each in depth.

For Japanese precision and the compact German pocket pen, our Pilot and Kaweco brand pages round out the field. Different houses, different hands. The pleasure is in finding yours.

Materials, finishes, and the look of the pen

Once the writing is sorted, the look is yours to choose, and fountain pens come in a wider range of materials than almost any other accessory. Resin and acrylic give colour and warmth and keep the pen light. Metal bodies in brass, aluminium, and steel add weight and presence for a more substantial feel in the hand. Lacquer and precious metals sit at the luxury end.

The finish changes the whole personality of the pen. A black resin pen is quiet and professional. A demonstrator is playful and mechanical. A gold pen is a statement.

For the classic professional look that never dates, our black fountain pens collection keeps it understated. For warmth and occasion, our gold fountain pens and the wider gold pen range bring the precious metal options together. Choose the body that matches your desk and your hand.

A fountain pen for the office

A fountain pen belongs on a professional desk more naturally than almost anywhere else. It signals care without saying a word, it makes signatures and considered notes feel deliberate, and it gives a small daily pleasure to work that is mostly typed. The key for office use is a reliable pen with a fine nib and a cartridge or converter that does not leak in a bag.

The fear of a fountain pen in the office is mess. Modern pens have made that fear obsolete.

A well chosen fountain pen survives flights, bags, and meetings without incident, and the cartridge system means refilling is clean and quick at the desk. Keep a ballpoint nearby for the shared form and the carbon copy, and the pair covers every professional situation. Many of our buyers carry exactly this combination.

A fountain pen as a gift

A fountain pen is one of the most considered gifts you can give, because it carries meaning the recipient feels every time they use it. It marks milestones the way few objects can. A first job, a graduation, a promotion, a retirement, a significant birthday. The pen becomes the record of the moment, kept and used long after.

It also solves the impossible recipient. Almost nobody buys themselves a proper fountain pen.

That is exactly why receiving one lands so well. Add engraving with a name or a date and the pen becomes one of a kind, a keepsake rather than a present. For a first fountain pen as a gift, lean toward a reliable, forgiving model so the recipient falls in love with the experience rather than fighting the pen. The flagship can come later, once the habit has taken hold.

Inks and keeping your fountain pen running

A fountain pen is only as good as what you put in it, and ink is half the pleasure of the hobby. Cartridges are the convenient default, clicking in and lasting weeks. Bottled ink, used with a converter, opens up a world of colour and shading that cartridges cannot match, from quiet office blue blacks to vivid blues, greens, and burgundies.

The first bottle of ink is the moment the hobby really begins. Cartridges are function. Bottled ink is fun.

Keeping a fountain pen running takes very little. Flush it with clean water every few weeks or when changing ink colours, keep the cap on between uses so the nib does not dry, and store it nib up. That is the whole routine.

Our inks and refills range keeps the cartridges, converters, and bottled inks stocked so your pens are never idle, and our fountain pen ink refill page collects the refill options across brands in one place. Buy ink with the pen. You will use more than you expect.

Fountain pen, rollerball, or ballpoint

It is worth knowing where the fountain pen sits among its cousins, because the right tool depends on the job, and most serious writers own more than one type. A fountain pen gives the finest writing experience and the most character, but it asks for a little care and the right paper. A rollerball offers much of the smoothness of a fountain pen with the convenience of a refill and a retractable body. A ballpoint is the most rugged and reliable, ready for any paper and any pocket.

No single pen does everything. That is why most people end up with a small set.

For the smooth liquid ink option that bridges fountain pen and ballpoint, our roller ball pens collection is the place to look. For the rugged everyday writer and the signature pen that handles any surface, our ball point pens collection covers the field. A fountain pen for the writing you care about, a ballpoint for the writing you just need done.

A short history of the fountain pen

The fountain pen as we know it arrived in the late nineteenth century, when reliable ink feeds finally tamed the mess of the dip pen and put a portable ink supply in the writer's hand. For most of the twentieth century it was simply how people wrote. Every letter, every contract, every school exercise book passed under a fountain pen nib.

The ballpoint arrived and took the everyday market on convenience. But the fountain pen never disappeared, because nothing replaced what it does best.

What changed is that the fountain pen became a choice rather than a default, and that turned out to suit it. Freed from being the only option, it became the considered one, the pen people reach for when the writing matters. That heritage is part of what you hold today, a direct line back through every important signature of the modern age.

History is not a sales pitch here. It is the reason these pens are built the way they are.

Fountain pens for left handed writers

Left handed writers are too often told a fountain pen is not for them. That is wrong, and it has put off a great many people who would have loved the experience. The truth is that most left handers write very happily with a fountain pen, with two small adjustments.

The first is nib choice. A fine or medium nib that lays down a slightly drier line works well, since it gives the ink a fraction more time to set as the hand moves across what it has just written. Some makers offer dedicated left handed nibs ground for the push motion of a left hand.

The second is grip and angle, which adjust naturally with a little practice.

The reward is the same as for anyone. A pen that needs no pressure, that does not tire the hand, that makes writing a pleasure. Left handers who persist usually become the most devoted fountain pen users of all, precisely because the comfort matters more to them.

Fountain pens for collectors

For some people a fountain pen is a tool. For others it becomes a collection, and the fountain pen is one of the most rewarding things to collect, because every piece is meant to be used as well as admired. Limited editions, rare materials, historic models, and flagship nibs all give the collector something to chase, and the market for fine pens holds value in a way few accessories do.

A collection usually starts by accident. One good pen leads to a second, and the habit forms.

What collectors look for is craft, rarity, and the story behind a pen. A famous nib, a small production run, a material that is no longer made. Our limited edition collection gathers the special runs and rarer pieces, and for the very finest fountain pens the wider premium range extends the field further. A fountain pen collection is one of the few that earns its keep every time you write.

Writing with a fountain pen in Indian conditions

A fountain pen behaves a little differently here, and it helps to write from inside those realities rather than ignore them. Indian notebook paper is often thinner and more absorbent than the heavy stock fountain pens were designed around, which means a wetter, broader nib can feather or bleed through. This is the single biggest reason we steer most buyers toward a fine or extra fine nib.

Choose the nib for the paper you actually use, not the paper in a catalogue.

Humidity matters too. In a damp coastal monsoon a pen left unused can dry slower, while in a dry summer it can dry faster, so the cap on habit matters more here than in a temperate climate. None of this is a problem, it is simply worth knowing.

For the tightest, cleanest line on thin Indian paper, our extra fine nib fountain pens page is the place to look. Match the pen to your conditions and a fountain pen performs beautifully anywhere in the country.

Fountain pens for calligraphy and expressive writing

Some buyers come to fountain pens not for everyday notes but for the beauty of the letterforms themselves, and the fountain pen is the natural tool for that. Italic and stub nibs, which are broader across than they are deep, create thick downstrokes and thin cross strokes automatically, giving ordinary handwriting an elegant, calligraphic quality with no special skill required.

This is where a fountain pen stops being a tool and becomes an instrument.

A 1.1 or 1.5 italic nib is the easy entry into expressive writing, flattering everyday script and turning a signature into something worth looking at. Dedicated calligraphy pens take it further for those who want to learn the formal hands properly. The line variation a flat nib produces simply cannot be faked with a ballpoint.

Our fountain pen calligraphy range gathers the italic and stub nib pens for buyers who want their writing to carry weight. Even if you never learn a formal script, an italic nib makes plain handwriting look considered, which is a small daily pleasure worth having.

Caring for your fountain pen

A fountain pen rewards a small amount of attention and lasts for decades in return. Flush the nib and feed with clean water every few weeks, more often if you switch ink colours or if a pen has been left to dry. Keep the cap on when the pen is not in use so the nib stays wet and ready. Store it nib up or flat, never nib down for long periods.

If a pen has dried out completely, a longer soak in clean water usually revives it. Fountain pens are forgiving of neglect, within reason.

None of this is demanding, and the payoff is a pen that writes as well in twenty years as it did on the first day. A fountain pen is one of the few things you buy that genuinely improves with use, as the nib settles to your hand and the pen becomes truly yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fountain pen is best for a beginner?

Start with a reliable steel nib pen from a trusted maker like Lamy, Pilot, or Kaweco, in a fine or medium nib, with a converter so you can use bottled ink. These write well out of the box, forgive a learning grip, and cost little enough to use daily without worry. Avoid starting with a flagship, since a forgiving first pen is what turns a beginner into a lifelong writer.

Do fountain pens leak on flights or in bags?

Modern fountain pens rarely leak when handled sensibly. Keep the pen full or empty rather than half full for flights, store it nib up, and keep the cap firmly on. Cartridge and converter pens travel especially well. The old fear of leaking belongs to a much earlier era of pen design, and a quality pen from a respected maker handles flights and daily commutes without incident.

What nib size should I choose for my first fountain pen?

A fine nib suits most first time buyers, especially in India, where handwriting tends to run small and notebook paper is often thin. A fine gives a clean, controlled line that does not feather or bleed. Choose a medium if you write larger or want a bolder, wetter line with more visible ink shading. You can always add a second pen with a different nib later.

How do I refill a fountain pen?

Two ways. A cartridge pen takes a sealed ink cartridge that clicks into the section, lasts weeks, and is swapped in seconds. A converter pen uses a small refillable piston that you dip into a bottle and fill by twisting, which lets you use any bottled ink colour. Many pens accept both. Piston fillers skip the cartridge entirely and draw ink straight from the bottle.

Are fountain pens worth the higher price over a ballpoint?

For the right person, easily. You are not paying for ink delivery, you are paying for an object kept for decades, a writing experience that makes the act pleasant, and a tool that improves as the nib settles to your hand. A good fountain pen written daily will still write in twenty years. If you write a lot, the comfort alone justifies it. If you rarely write longhand, a quality ballpoint may serve you better.
