FOUNTAIN PEN MANUAL

The parts of your fountain pen

Your  fountain pen  consists of four parts when assembled—the cap, the nib, the barrel, and the ink reservoir. Most reservoirs are a piston converter, ink cartridge or a built in piston The converter and the inbuilt piston require fountain pen bottled ink. The cartridge is a self-contained, disposable unit filled with ink.

Preparing and Using a New Fountain Pen

Removing the barrel

First remove the cap. Then remove the barrel by turning it counter clockwise.



Whether you are using an ink cartridge or the converter pump the fountain pen must first be primed with ink. Ink must be in the feed groove, in the feed wings, and under the nib before the fountain pen will write properly and continuously.

Preparing and Using a New Fountain Pen

Place the fountain pen, nib first, into the bottle of ink until the nib is entirely covered. Twist the piston converter counterclockwise 
at the top. This forces the air out of the converter. Then twist the top of the piston converter clockwise to draw the ink up into the converter. While holding the nib above the bottle of ink, slowly twist the piston converter counterclockwise until a bead of ink 
flows from the tip of the nib (Figure B). Gently blot excess ink from the nib with a lint-free cloth or blotter paper.

Dip The Nib

  • Place the nib first into the bottle of ink.
  • Ensure the nib is entirely covered.

Expel Air

  • Twist the piston converter counter clockwise. 
  • This will force out the air from the converter

Draw Up Ink

  • Twist the top of the converter clockwise.
  •  Ink will be drawn into the converter.

Prime The Nib

  • Hold the nib above the bottle. 
  • Slowly twist the converter counter clockwise until a baed of ink appears at the nib tip.

Blot Excess Ink

  • Use a lint- free cloth or blotter paper. 
  • Gently blot the nib to remove excess ink.

Inserting a fountain pen cartridge

Check if the converter is snug fit or if it is threaded. If it's a simple snug fit, then remove the piston converter by gently pulling it away from the nib section. If it is threaded, then insert a fountain pen cartridge into the nib and push firmly until the cartridge seats itself (Note : Be gentle! Not rough) you will hear /sense a small click.


Now you must prime the pen – Squeeze the cartridge so ink comes out of the tip of the nib. Clean the nib and under the feed with 
a tissue; write a few words to test the pen. It should write but if not, squeeze again but harder. Clean the ink from the nib and under 
the feed with a tissue. Test and repeat if the pen does not write.

Built in Piston Filler

Design: Screw-driven piston. A knob at the end of the barrel drives a long-pitch screw shaft on which rides a piston

To fill: Gently turn piston knob counterclockwise until it stops. Do not apply any pressure. Immerse nib and part of section into ink. Turn piston knob clockwise until it stops. Repeat this cycle once to displace air trapped by the first cycle. Remove pen from ink. Turn the piston counterclockwise enough to bleed out two or three drops and then turn it clockwise again until it stops. Wipe ink from the nib section using a lint free soft paper tissue.

Fountain pen will not write,
 skips, or writes a few lines
 and stops.

If this is the first time the pen is used and you are using the cartridge then the pen has not been properly primed. Prime the pen again by squeezing the cartridge hard; you need to see a lot of ink come out of the tip.

 If the fountain pen has been in use for a while and has written well in the past first run a small stream of cold water over the tip of the nib-test the pen – it should 
write. If this does not work try priming the pen again. 
If this does not work you may have to flush out the pen entirely. Do not soak your entire pen in water. Unscrew nib section from the pen and soak or flush this.

This means the ink holder has lost vacuum. When using 
a cartridge, this can occur when the ink supply is very 
low. Change the cartridge when the ink gets very low; 
do not wait until the pen stops writing. If this happens with a converter pump then the pump is bad; obtain 
a replacement.
 
Occasionally a small hair or paper fiber can get caught 
in the nib slit. This will involve sending it to the service centre for cleaning.

Fountain Pen Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning Your Fountain Pen

Just as your car needs its oil changed, your fountain pen needs internal cleaning. A once a month cleaning will often save you a trip to the service centre. For built in piston fillers, Fill and empty the pen three or four times with room temperature water to dissolve the solids. This is especially important if you change brands or even colors of ink, or use a cartridge exclusively (some inks react with each other, creating a viscous substance).

Cartridge/Converter

Pens also need to be cleaned regularly, especially if cartridges are used most. Separate the cartridge carefully and hold the nib section with the nib facing down under room temperature tap water until the water runs clear. Never put your pen away for an extended period with a cartridge full of ink in the pen.

Inks Do’s and Don'ts

We get many questions regarding what inks to use and what inks not to use. What is the safest solution? First of all, sticking to conventionally formulated fountain pen inks, such as those we sell on our own inks page. If you want to experiment, try sticking to pigment-based inks that are specifically formulated for fountain pens, such as those made by Sailor. And whatever ink you use, regular cleaning 
will help insure your pen's feed system 
will have a long and happy life.

Choice of Paper

Use only high quality paper or at the very least, don't use coated or "fuzzy" paper. The nib will clog and cause a loss of ink.

Storing your pen

If your fountain pen will not be used for an extended period of time, remove and clean the nib and converter. This prevents ink from drying and clogging the pen. Always store your pen with the nib in an upright position. This allows the ink to stay in the reservoir to prevent evaporation.

or workmanship. If found to be defective within the warranty period; the product will be repaired 
or replaced free of charge.

This warranty does not cover routine maintenance, or damage resulting from the failure to maintain the product in accordance with instructions provided by the brand. This warranty also does not cover ordinary wear and tear arising from use of the product, or damage that may arise from accidental or intentional misuse or abuse, alteration or customization, or repair by unauthorized persons. This warranty also does 
not cover damage that is caused by the use of inks or refills other than those made recommended 
by the brand.

Except as provided herein, and to the extent permitted by law, the brand makes no other warranties, express or implied, and specifically excludes warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The brands liability under this warranty shall be limited to repair or replacement of the writing instrument and the brand shall not be responsible under this warranty for any damages and/or incidental or consequential damages, whether or not foreseeable. Some products may be out of production or may be unable to be repaired. In that circumstance, the brand reserves the right to substitute a product of comparable value 
and style.

For service under this warranty, please return your pen to any William Penn store or send it directly to 
its service centre located at the below given address along with the original guarantee certificate duly completed by an authorized dealer or proof of purchase, such as a dated receipt showing the 
purchase of the product claimed.
