THE HUB – at the center of it all

Posted on December 03, 2020

We love to hear from our customers and the readers of this blog. Unsurprisingly our clientele includes a number of witty closet-writers, many of whom write in to share their honest feedback, questions, and even the occasional kudos. We are happy to have received permission from this author to share his thoughts with all our readers; we hope you enjoy this piece as much as we did:)

When the HUB was delivered to my home, it looked like a common, albeit stylish, metal box with five drawers. With the experience gained from 17 years of marriage, I knew better than to say a word but I couldn’t resist a pained look at what I presumed was my wife’s latest impulse purchase. When I found the HUB placed on the kitchen counter, I thought it was just a nice place to keep recipe books and food-related records. But over the next few days I noticed the number of times the HUB was being used was increasing by the day.

The LPG supplier’s delivery boy loves coming to our house because he has to wait endlessly while we track down smaller denomination currency notes and the book in which supplies are recorded. The extra wait means a bigger tip. This time however, the speed with which he was dispensed with surprised the boy more than anybody. Both the book and small denomination currency were now kept in the HUB. Soon after he left, the dhobi brought back our laundered clothes. It’s a standard practice to verify the clothes brought back with the list prepared prior to handing them over. My wife was visiting the grocery store and I called her anticipating a long, frustrating game of “which cupboard? uff you can’t find anything, look in the one next to it”. It’s in the HUB she announced…. And it was!

The HUB was increasingly becoming the focal point for safely keeping almost all the small and sundry items required to manage the household. Out of sheer curiosity I looked into the number of things that had found a place in the HUB and I was truly astonished! All the items prone to being misplaced were now housed in the HUB; stationery, scribble pads, address books, the newspaper, grocery bills, mobile chargers, spare house and car keys, children’s birthday invitations, sunglasses and even band aids and antiseptic lotions. When I discovered that I could attach magnetized key hooks, a magnetized pen holder and even a bottle opener to the walls of the HUB, it dawned on me that by ingeniously making the box out of metal, they opened it up to innumerable possibilities. A clock and a monthly calendar soon found a place on top of the HUB and I was more than amused when I found a message for our daughter to warm up food when she came back from school.

During March, when the pandemic resulted in offices being shut and personnel being asked to work from their respective homes, productivity was a big concern. Minor issues like switching desks and chairs or finding a place to store documents and work accessories at home caused worry. I wondered if a HUB could rescue me and put my anxieties to rest. My investment in another HUB proved to be wise. The marker board I attached to its wall to make notes or read from during virtual meetings was a big help. My earphones, pen drives, mouse, mobile and laptop chargers were within easy reach. I was even able to fit my Ipad into one of the drawers and I soon found myself more relaxed working from the comfort of my home. My productivity was on the ascend.

My son Rohan who had noticed the improvement asked if he too could have a HUB to help him with his online classes. He’d given it a lot of thought. “All my books, geometry box, pens and pencils can go into the HUB” he claimed. He mentioned that the drawers would help him organize everything and his performance would improve as a consequence. He certainly made a convincing case; if his performance could be improved with a small additional investment, I thought it worth more than a serious thought! Now my daughter has asked for one as well and my wife just gives me a knowing look whenever I even think about commenting on her shopping.
