Mangles, wrist wear, wrist gear, call it what you may, one this is for sure, they are here to stay. You’ve got to admit there is just that ‘something’ about a man with a bracelet! They exude a kind of arrogance and self-confidence which is hard to ignore. It is said pre-historic men adorned themselves with bracelets made of bones and shells to ward off the evil spirit. Across cultures, kings and mighty warriors have proudly worn their armbands around their wrists.
Wealthy men wore bracelets to display their power and status. While Egyptian pharaohs wore the band as a symbol of monarchy and to serve religious and spiritual interests, the Greek and Roman soldiers wore different leather bands to signify their allegiance and/or rank. Even our very own mythology overflows with men wearing this accessory. There are romantic stories created around the bracelets on how they were given as a coming of age gift. Bracelets evolved over time from good luck charm to status symbol to the modern style accessory for men. Listed are some of the most common styles :
The Wide band
The wide band is generally recognized to portray strength and masculinity. These may be at times embellished with metal studs. They usually compliment a watch worn on the other wrist. However they do restrict wrist movement and may not be suitable for work wear. They are better left to weekend dressing.
The Design band
These bands have texture, design and style. There may be cases where a metal thread may be woven into the band itself to add that distinctive edge. These bands suit all wrist sizes and usually compliment tattoos. Again these are usually not suitable to be worn to work
Thin Rope band
These are subtle, stylish and versatile. They go well with work wear or weekend wear and suit all wrist sizes. It’s a great way to break up the formality of the suit while still looking appropriate. They are found in an assortment of colours and finishes.
The Metal bands
While these are not much appreciated by all, they do have a dedicated fan base. While some are large and flashy and may look good on a movie star ( both young and aging!) it is not for all as they are often associated with the ‘bad boy’ look. Men who revel in this look love to wear multiples of these. William Penn houses a large range of wristbands that are stylish and smart. Available at all William Penn stores across India and on their online store. Making a gift of a bracelet to a man might mean giving him an excuse to wear it too! So go on, gift a man with one.
