Digital Detox: It doesn’t have to be that hard.

Of all the things digital, detox is something that no one is exactly fond of. Because it requires extreme levels of abstinence towards something that has become an inevitable part of our everyday lives – our phones and laptops.

In our incessant push towards hyper-productivity, we’ve discovered that very often, the effects are exactly the opposite of what’s desired. To quote Economic Times, Yes, we all love our devices and all the amazing things they allow us to do. It turns out, we’re being controlled by something we should be controlling. And it’s consuming our attention and crippling our ability to focus, think, be present, and, most important, to truly connect, both with others and with ourselves.

And this is backed by stats. A study from Stanford University found that multitasking actually reduces our productivity by as much as 40%. Gloria Mark of the University of California, Irvine, found that in a typical office, an employee gets only 11 minutes between each interruption — and then takes an average of 25 minutes to even get back to the original task.  (Source: ET)

This is a big problem that needs solving. Some of the many ways suggested by experts online, while proven to be effective, revolve around showing a high level of mental resolve, with very little reward. For instance, turning off notifications, converting phone screens to black and white, designated no-tech hours, taking tech out of the bedroom, uninstalling social media apps etc.

Yes, these could do very well get you closer to digital detox, but just reading the above made some of us squirm in our seats. Because the existential question remains, “What do I do in life if not for my phone?” And it is not entirely untrue; it has become our primary source of entertainment, education, and much more. A life without phone, heck, even an hour without phone sounds like a herculean task.
